Third-graders at Ralph Askins Elementary School recently got a chance to experiment with electricity, completing several hands-on demonstrations in their classrooms. Fayetteville Public Utilities visited all of the third-grade classes and talked to the students about what electricity is, where it comes from and how they use electricity in their homes.
During the class, students worked in groups and completed five electrical experiments. With the assistance of teachers and FPU employees, they used lantern batteries and 1.2-volt lightbulbs to complete circuits, made simple switches, explored conductors and insulators, learned about short-circuits and built electromagnets.
Students also learned about the importance of electrical safety, why you shouldn’t overload electrical outlets and why it’s important that they not use frayed or fraying wires or cords.
