Herb Day 2023 “Going Native” presented by the Herb Society of Nashville

$60.00The Herb Society of Nashville (herbsocietysnashville.org) announces plans for its annual Herb Day to be held on Saturday, September 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cheekwood Estate and Gardens in Nashville. Themed Going Native, the program features speakers Shannon Currey from Izel Native Plants, Christie Henderson from TennGreen Land Conservancy and Leah Larabell from High Garden Teas. The full-day event includes breakfast, lunch, guest speakers and exhibits from local artisans.
Shannon Currey is responsible for education and outreach at Izel Native Plants. Currey’s talk is titled “What’s a Sedge and Why Do I Care: Spotlight on Native Sedges.” With a Ph.D. in social psychology and training in horticulture, Currey brings a special set of skills to horticultural education and outreach. Izel Native Plants developed a unique model in horticulture by consolidating the inventories of several native plant nurseries in a user-friendly website. Izel is the recipient of the 2022 Perennial Plant Association’s National Retail Sales Award.
Christie Henderson is deputy director for TennGreen Land Conservancy. Her talk is titled “Strategies for Conserving Native Plant Habitats.” TennGreen Land Conservancy (formerly the Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation) is a 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit and the oldest accredited statewide land conservancy in Tennessee.
Leah Larabell, co-owner of High Garden Teas in Nashville, is a trained clinical-level herbalist, practicing for over 20 years. A Master’s degree in counseling and psychology enhances her work as an ecotherapist. Her talk is titled “Native Plant Medicine: The Backyard Apothecary.”
This tasty, fun and informative day, hosted against Cheekwood’s beautiful backdrop, is a yearly favorite. Tickets are limited. Early bird pricing is $60 through August 27 and $65 beginning August 28. Founded in 1973, the Nashville chapter of the Herb Society of America celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The Herb Society of Nashville (HSN) strives to be a recognized source of knowledge regarding the cultivation and use of herbs where each member feels a sense of belonging and personal worth based on knowledge gained through membership in the local and national affiliation. Proudly maintaining two gardens, one at Cheekwood and another at Centennial Park, HSN also supports the Herb Garden at the United States National Arboretum in Washington, D.C.
