You likely pass them every day. Their names are familiar, even if the businesses are just landmarks or items in giving directions. Your friends, neighbors and family members work at them, but you might not have the slightest clue what the companies do. It is important to take a step back and recognize the success manufacturers bring to our communities.
The Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry hosted the first ever Coolest Thing Made in Tennessee competition earlier this year. The purpose of the contest was to bring attention to the state’s vibrant manufacturing industry, which employed 353,000 people and had over $62 billion in total economic output in 2021. Some 150 products were submitted and then narrowed down by vote to the top 16, top eight, final four and then the ultimate winner. Six products that found spots in the top 16 were made in electric cooperative service areas across the state, including the overall winner of the competition.
Competition aside, Tennessee’s electric cooperatives provide energy to many important businesses in our communities. In addition to serving existing businesses, cooperatives also work to bring new ones to the region. We partner with the Tennessee Valley Authority, state of Tennessee and local community leaders to help industrial prospects understand the advantages and benefits of doing business in our service areas. Supporting our communities as they grow and thrive is a team effort, and we’re honored to be ambassadors for the places we serve.
These businesses, companies and manufacturers depend on the energy we provide to make the products we all need, use and enjoy, especially as the holiday season approaches. We couldn’t be more proud that they trust Tennessee’s electric cooperatives and call our communities home.
