As an integral part of the lives of rural Tennesseans, electric cooperatives like Southwest Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation give consumer-members the power to excel by offering opportunities for expanded horizons and educational experiences.
One of the opportunities for local students offered by Southwest Tennessee EMC is Washington Youth Tour (WYT), an annual event sponsored by Tennessee’s not-for-profit electric cooperatives. Local students are given the opportunity to participate in the Washington Youth Tour Creative Writing and Scholarship Competition when they are juniors in high school. Trip winners receive expense-paid trips to Washington, D.C., through Southwest Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation and are eligible for even more benefits by winning the competition.
Tennessee electric cooperatives have been partnering with Union University in Jackson for several years now to offer scholarship opportunities to WYT delegates. Union University recently announced 2019 scholarship recipients. Ellie Johnson of Munford High School is the 2019 Southwest Tennessee EMC scholarship winner. If Ellie chooses to attend Union University, she will receive a four-year, $16,000 scholarship.
Your electric cooperative believes that West Tennesseans should not be constrained by where they choose to live. We seek to offer our consumer-members the power to be anything they desire to be by securing opportunities that can close the gap between urban areas and our rural homes.
Success for our members is a mission that we are committed to as a rural electric cooperative. We seek to give our members the power to be able to live and raise families here not in spite of the limitations but because of the abundant opportunities in rural west Tennessee.
